I have to think that in the time of Xerxes, they too knew of a long-lost history, full of life and wonders, yet under a closer eye, dark and sinister. They scoffed it off and dismissed its valuable lessons as their own demise crept up underneath and swallowed them.
Us...now. The chain-linked string of existential global threats, real or manufactured, has momentum now. Its machine is humming. The Franken stitches are right in front of our eyes...if you dare to see them.
